On Saturday, September 14th, the Montford Point Marines Chapter 41, representing both Beloit, Wisconsin, and Rockford, Illinois, held a successful military fundraiser at the historic Veteran's Memorial Hall in Rockford. The event was organized by Larry Robertson, a dedicated veteran recently elected as the new Vice-President of Chapter 41. Robertson, a community leader and the owner of AvonXtreme, brought together veterans, dignitaries, and local families for an afternoon of remembrance, fun, and community bonding.
The fundraiser paid special tribute to two local heroes: Marine Staff Sergeant Christopher Lissau, who sacrificed his life in Vietnam, and Marine Corporal Cory Spires, who served in Afghanistan. Their families, represented by Ms. Clauda Bankes and Ms. Patricia Spires, were honored during the event.
The day’s activities featured music from the talented Flat Car Riders (Jimmy and Kelth), delicious BBQ rib dinners, and a family-friendly atmosphere. It was a memorable way to engage with local veterans, honor their sacrifices, and raise funds for Montford Point Marine Chapter 41.
The National Montford Point Marine Association, Inc. works tirelessly to preserve the legacy of the first African Americans to serve in the United States Marine Corps between 1942 and 1949. Their mission extends beyond recognition—they aim to improve the social conditions of veterans through youth mentorship programs, educational scholarships, and family assistance. Chapter 41's event in Rockford is just one of many efforts to support these initiatives.
Larry Robertson not only led this incredible event but is also spearheading a variety of community-driven initiatives through his organization, AvonXtreme. His mission is to Empower our Community Together by transforming Rockford's tomorrow. AvonXtreme focuses on building the future of our children, which in turn strengthens the community as a whole in a positively synergistic way. Robertson’s dedication goes beyond veterans—he is committed to helping children, youth, families, small business owners, and veterans alike.
